In front of the charming Chapelle Saint-Léon in the heart of Eguisheim stands an impressive statue of Pope Leo IX, born in this village in 1002. The statue shows him in papal robes and recalls his influential role as a reforming pope in the 11th century. Together with the chapel, it is a powerful symbol of Eguisheim's religious heritage.

The nave of the original church had become too old and too small and was therefore demolished in 1807 and replaced by the spacious current nave in the "barn" style in 1808 and 1809.
