In the middle of the renovated castle courtyard, the statue of the "Spätlesereiter" (late harvest rider) has been the new eye-catcher since September 2021. It depicts the legendary rider and his horse. The bronze sculpture was created by Berlin sculptor Valerie Otte, who had previously won a competition. The statue was intended to speak for itself and was deliberately placed at ground level. The Spätlesereiter (late harvest rider) is a figure from a local legend that is said to explain the accidental discovery of the Spätlese wine at the Schloss Johannisberg winery in the Rheingau region.
