The current bronze sculpture at this fountain was erected in 1975. Originally, there was also a fountain in the same location.

The Fuldaer Zeitung wrote on August 11, 1976:

In the center of this sandstone fountain rises a bronze sculpture by the artist Heinrich Söllner from Schweinfurt, depicting a water pump with three female water carriers. The original fountain, "Milchborn" (Milk Spring), was also located directly at this spot on Marktstraße (Market Street), which was formerly called Töpfergasse (Potter's Lane), and existed from the Middle Ages until the mid-19th century. It was then replaced by a pump fountain, which was demolished after the turn of the century. (1)

The sculpture shows that women were responsible for housework, which included, among other things, procuring drinking water. The artwork symbolizes that women at that time had to perform heavy labor to provide for their families.

This is the only artwork in Fulda that depicts working women.

A very beautiful, artistically designed fountain.

The "Fountain with Water Carriers," erected in 1975, stands on the site of the former "Milk Spring" fountain. In the center of this sandstone fountain rises a bronze sculpture by the artist Heinrich Söllner from Schweinfurt, depicting a water pump with three water carriers. The original "Milk Spring" fountain was located directly on this spot in Marktstraße, formerly Töpfergasse (Potter's Lane), and existed from the Middle Ages until the mid-19th century. It was then replaced by a pump fountain, which was demolished after the turn of the century. The artwork symbolizes the arduous work women had to perform, such as fetching drinking water, to provide for their families. It is the only artwork in Fulda depicting working women.
