The current bronze sculpture at this fountain was erected in 1975. Originally there was also a fountain at the same place.

The Fuldaer Zeitung wrote on August 11, 1976:
In the center of this sandstone fountain is a bronze sculpture by the artist Heinrich Söllner from Schweinfurt, which depicts a water pump with three water carriers. The original "Milchborn" fountain was also located directly at this point in Marktstraße, which used to be called Töpfergasse and existed from the Middle Ages to the middle of the 19th century. It was then replaced by a pump well, which was demolished after the turn of the century.(1).
The sculpture shows that women who are responsible for doing the housework, which includes e.g. also the procurement of drinking water counted, were responsible. The work of art symbolizes that women had to do heavy labor to provide for their families.
This is the only artwork in Fulda depicting working women.

A very beautiful, artistically designed fountain.

The "fountain with water carriers" built in 1975 was set up on the site of the former running fountain "Milchborn". In the middle of this sandstone fountain rises a bronze sculpture by the artist Heinrich Söllner from Schweinfurt, which depicts a water pump with three water carriers. The original "Milchborn" fountain was located directly at this point in Marktstrasse, the former Töpfergasse, and existed from the Middle Ages to the middle of the 19th century. It was then replaced by a pump fountain, which was broken off after the turn of the century. The work of art symbolizes that back then women had to do heavy work such as getting drinking water to support their families. It is the only work of art in Fulda that depicts working women.
