The path continues after the bridge and becomes the Fimmvörðuháls trail, which takes you from the Waterfall Way to Þórsmörk in the highlands. To get back, follow the way you came and get to witness all the sites from another angle.

While the construction may seem a bit improvised, the whole thing is actually quite sturdy. It's definitely worth hiking from Skokafoss to here – the path is magnificent. You can either go back down along the river or take the somewhat monotonous jeep route (then you have to go through/over the gate at the farmer's house).
