It is one of several waterfalls in the region known for its abundance of waterfalls, with more than 37 different waterfalls. Neðstifoss, together with Miðfoss, is a 'twinfoss', which means that they are close to each other and together have a total height of approximately 25 meters. They fall over a basalt cliff into a desolate landscape formed by volcanoes and covered in moss.
