According to tradition, hikers who have completed the entire Rennsteig trail hang their worn-out hiking boots on a tree, signpost, or railing in Blankenstein. We noticed that not only were there worn-out hiking boots hanging there, but many of the pairs were still fairly new. Incidentally, the Rennsteig Association removes the hiking boots from time to time, as there are simply too many.
