Here rises the Lauter which is next to the Modau and the Mergbach one of the 3 distinctive sources on the Neunkirchner height. The Mergbach carries after confluence with the Osterbach the name Gersprenz.

Hioer rises 540 m above sea level, the Lauter, which has also been the patron saint of the new Lautertal municipality since the local government reform in 1972.
After 31 km it has lost its name and flows into the Rhine as Winkelbach near Gernsheim

The Lauter, called Winkelbach in the lower reaches, is a 32.4 km long, eastern and right tributary of the Rhine in southern Hesse. It rises in the Odenwald, flows in the Hessian districts of Bergstrasse and Groß-Gerau and flows into the Rhine near Gernsheim.
