According to plans by Josef Wessiken, the new church was built by city master builder Jakob Ceconii in the neo-Gothic style on the newly created site of the polished bastions and the associated barracks.
In 1898 the new church with its 61 m high towers was inaugurated. After heavy bomb damage in World War II, the church was rebuilt according to plans by Michael Kurz.
The original appearance of the neo-Gothic church was largely lost in the course of reconstruction.
