Walled gate that once controlled the narrowest spot between Mönchsberg and the Salzach river.

First build in 1280, but had to be rebuilt after the great fire of 2612.

Hiking

On the left bank of the Salzach, a road leading out of town ran and still runs between the old town and Mülln. The first fortifications may have been built on this road as early as 1280. The outer hermitage is first mentioned in 1367. In Judas Thaddäus Zauner's Chronicle of Salzburg, it was mentioned that Archbishop Pilgrim II of Puchheim (1386–96) had connected the "inner hermitage" and "outer hermitage" with a wall. Whether this means a river bank wall or a (less conclusive) defensive wall remains an open question.
