Hiking

The first wooden chapel in honor of Mary was built in the middle of the 17th century. This paid homage to the miraculous image of Mary, who miraculously survived a great fire. In 1710 the stone chapel was built. It was renovated and inaugurated in 2009. Next to the original chapel is the impressive basilica. From the pilgrimage site you have a wonderful view of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.

Cycling

The heart of the pilgrimage church is a small miraculous image of an unknown painter. Legend has it that the image of Mary survived the fire of a baker's house as the only object. The picture changed hands and in 1652 the first small chapel for the picture was set up on the Plainberg. The construction of the large pilgrimage church began about 20 years later and after its completion more and more pilgrims came to Maria Plain.
