In the 1870s, many Italian immigrants came to New York, mostly looking for a new life in the city that never sleeps. Poverty reigned in southern Italy and there was a lot of promise from the idea of tearing down all the tents at home and starting over in Manhattan. However, Italians then lived in small, rather dingy apartment buildings, which at the time covered about 17 blocks around Mulberry Street. Everything was so densely built that the lower floors often got no light.

Organized crime has always been a big part of the neighborhood. The Mafia had had a strong presence in Little Italy in New York for many years. Celebrities like Robert De Niro, who grew up in Little Italy, shared his experiences of the neighborhood and its gangs in films like Godfather and Mean Street.

By the early 20th century, the ethnic neighborhoods, like Little Italy, were slowly disappearing as the descendants of the immigrants became wealthier and moved to more affluent neighborhoods within Manhattan.

Recent censuses say that today only about five percent of Little Italy's residents actually have Italian roots. All of them are born in America. In addition, Little Italy has become smaller and smaller over the years.

Now very much geared towards tourists and quite crowded. Nevertheless, one should have gone through it once. There are beautiful street art pictures on some houses.
