The site of today's Washington Square Park was used as farmland until the end of the 18th century. The site later became a cemetery, far outside what was then the city of New York. After the cemetery was closed in 1825, the area was leveled and converted into the Washington Military Parade Ground. The streets around the square developed into a popular residential area of the city in the 1830s. In the 1850s the square was converted into a park and years later it was placed under the management of the New York City Department of Parks.
Today the park is a popular meeting place with several monuments, such as the 'Washington Square Arch' and the central fountain.
