The University "Leucorea" was founded in 1502 by Elector Friedrich III. founded. The name comes from the Greek term "leukos oros" = in German "white mountain", based on the city name "Wittenberg".
From 1512 to 1518 Martin Luther taught as a professor of Bible interpretation at the university.
Napoleon had the university closed on December 5, 1814. In 1815 the university then moved to Halle.
In 1842/1843, the former university was converted into barracks and was repeatedly remodeled in the decades that followed (also as living space).
The LEUCOREA Foundation was established in 1994 with the aim of bringing academic life back to Wittenberg.
