The old town district of Niederburg is located in the left bank of the Rhine in Konstanz, north of the Minster. It is considered to be the oldest part of the city. In the past, it was mainly fishermen, craftsmen and small merchants who lived here. However, many impressive patrician houses were also built here. These usually belonged to wealthy canons. Although part of the quarter was destroyed in a city fire in 1355, many historic houses from the late Middle Ages can still be found here today. Also in the district is the Zoffingen monastery, which is the only surviving monastery in the former episcopal city. Today the district is a magnet for locals and visitors. In the romantic alleyways there are numerous shops as well as cozy pubs and wine taverns.
