The former pleasure garden of Schwerin Castle is still a worthwhile place to visit today and has lots of eye-catchers.

The palace gardens in Schwerin are considered one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Northern Germany. Originally designed as a pleasure garden based on the French model, they underwent their distinctive design from 1748 onward. The Kreuzkanal (Cross Canal) was designed by landscape architect Jean Legeay, adorned with sculptures from the workshop of the Saxon court sculptor Balthasar Permoser.

According to plans by Lenné, the palace gardens were expanded around the middle of the 19th century. The basic Baroque structure was retained, while the surrounding area,
the greenhouse garden, kitchen gardens, and the riverside areas, were landscaped according to English models. The garden was largely spared from an intended conversion into a public park
in the second half of the 20th century.

It now covers an area of approximately 25 hectares.
