Since King Henry I had Merseburg expanded after 919, he is considered the city's founder. In 1933 the city's 1000th anniversary was celebrated with a week of festivals. During this week of celebration, on June 24, 1933, the stone monument was inaugurated. It was created by local sculptor Paul Juckoff.

Henry I (* around 876; † July 2, 936 in the Palatinate of Memleben) from the noble Liudolfinger family was Duke of Saxony from 912 and King of the East Franconian Empire from 919 to 936. The popular nickname as the birder is only documented from the 12th century.
Ottonian historical works pay particular tribute to Henry's unification and pacification of the empire both internally and externally. For a long time, Heinrich was considered the first “German” king in the “German Empire”.
