Frederick William III was born in 1770 and was apparently a rather shy child. He preferred to speak concisely, in an almost military style. At the age of 23, he married the 17-year-old Princess Louise of Mecklenburg. They had ten children together. In 1797, Frederick William ascended the throne. The new king wanted nothing to do with his father's intrigues and affairs.

Frederick William III (* August 3, 1770, Potsdam, † June 7, 1840, Berlin) was King of Prussia (from 1797) and Margrave of Brandenburg (until 1806). He belonged to the noble House of Hohenzollern.

During his reign, he also stayed in Merseburg, as the city was the Prussian seat of government.

A life-size equestrian statue was erected in honor of the king by Louis Tuaillon in 1918. The bronze monument, also the last work by the German sculptor, was unceremoniously erected in the palace gardens in 1935, where it has been located again since 1998.
