The Hygieia fountain in Karlsruhe was created between 1905 and 1909 by Johannes Hirt and donated by Wilhelm Klose, which is why it is also referred to as the Klose fountain in predominantly older literature.
The fountain is located in front of the Vierordtbad and takes up the motif of Hygieia, who is already depicted in the gable above the entrance to the bath. In Greek mythology, Hygieia is the goddess of health, from which the word hygiene is derived.
The bowl fountain is made of bronze. On the base in the middle, Hygieia is the only one clothed and holds a jug from which water flows in her left hand and a snake (attribute of her father Asclepius) in her right hand, whose mouth spits water. The goddess is flanked by youths on both sides of the base. Grey herons spew water at the corners of the base, and water also pours into the fountain from a dozen fish heads. The original gilded inscription on the base under Hygieia reads: Flow pure and bright / source of health (front) and Give courage to the strong / fresh blood to the sick (back). Two boys and two girls are sitting on the edge of the round fountain bowl. They are all refreshing themselves with the water that Hygieia provides; it is supposed to symbolize the healing effects of water. The water falls from the fountain bowl into a round basin at the bottom. Before the festival grounds were redesigned in 1981 - the fountain is located on the edge of the square - this basin still had a step.
Due to its artistic value, the fountain was not melted down during the two world wars. In 2011, a model of the fountain was discovered in the garden of the listed Loschwitz Villa at Schevenstrasse 27 in Dresden. The model was probably created in 1906 to present the design to the people of Karlsruhe and to avoid controversy like the one that occurred when the Stephanien fountain was built (1905). The model is about 90 cm high, made of copper and functional. See de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hygieia-Brunnen_(Karlsruhe)

Fountain in front of the venerable Vierordtbad.
The Vierordtbad is the oldest public bathing facility in Karlsruhe. Completed in 1873. The historicist cultural monument of particular importance in the neo-renaissance style is centrally located on the fairground next to the congress center

Beautiful fountain in front of the Vierortbad. Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, is depicted in the pediment above the bath's entrance.
