Best Hikes to Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers

Tips

  • The list of the so-called "14 helpers in need" is not uniform everywhere, as regional peculiarities are sometimes taken into account. As a rule, the following patron saints are named (the text is from a tablet from Memmingen, which dates back to the Baroque period; the original spelling – which is partly foreign to us – has been retained):
St. Blaise - intercedes for sore throats
St. George - is to be invoked in times of war
St. Erasmus - for intestinal and abdominal pain
St. Vitus - a great friend of children's hearts
St. Pantaleon - patron of physicians, powerful with God
St. Christopher - he provides powerful protection against hail and bad weather
St. Dionysus - is invoked in times of major pain
St. Cyriacus - can help those possessed by the devil
St. Achatius - he nimbly helps Christian soldiers
St. Eustace - averts marital distress
St. Giles - helps in the recognition of secret sins
St. Margaret - where The devil's cunning finds an entrance
St. Catherine - when wisdom is lacking in study
St. Barbara - receives the sacrament in death

  • Construction of the chapel began in 1922 in the immediate vicinity of the so-called Hohnbaum, a mighty beech tree just before the town entrance from the direction of Nitterscheid. Despite some support measures, this tree fell victim to a storm and no longer exists today. The chapel was dedicated to the 14 Holy Helpers and houses wooden figures of the saints, which were made by Wilfried Beitz from Nitterscheid. (Source: Wikipedia)
