Saint Helena, to whom the church in Mutscheid is dedicated, was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who, after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" before Rome, recognized Christianity as a religion and ended the long period of persecution with the "Zedict of Tolerance" from Milan ended). In the early fourth century she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It is therefore often shown with a cross as an attribute.
The memorial day of Saint Helena in the calendar of saints is August 18th.

There has been evidence of a place of worship in Mutscheid since the 9th century. Around 1173, a church stood in Mutscheid, which still belongs to the Archbishopric of Cologne today. The Romanesque tower of this church still stands today. Adjoining it to the east is the old Gothic church, which was consecrated between 1435 and 1457. At the beginning of the 20th century, the building was extended to the north by a three-aisled basilica with a transept.

The current church building dates back to the 15th century, while the sacrament house bears the date 1517. Only the church tower survived from previous buildings dating back to the 12th century, making it the oldest surviving part of the church. Little is known of the older buildings. The extension was planned and constructed in 1909/10 and consecrated in 1911. This expansion largely preserved the late Gothic church, with only the northern wall being breached. In 1926, the old building was repaired, and the steeple was replaced at the same time. A comprehensive renovation of the church took place from 1960 to 1965. Source: mutscheid.com/pfarrkirche
