“The rocks in the Falkensteiner Valley were formed by eruptions of the Donnersberg volcano around 285 million years ago. Due to the viscous consistency of its magma, towering rock pinnacles formed, which collapsed with further magma supply. The rocky pinnacles, made of ryolite, cascaded down the flanks of the volcano. These rock fragments became more and more rounded as the distance increased and solidified in the Falkensteiner Valley through the precipitation of quartz. The high rock walls are very resistant. The rock passage was driven into the rock by mining.”
