The Alte Hofhaltung is one of the most impressive buildings in the city. The building complex once served as the residence of the bishops.

Forerunner of the Old Court was the Castrum Babenberg and the former Palatinate Emperor Henry II. Since the founding of the diocese in 1007, she was probably also the residence of the bishop. After the cathedral fire of 1185 a single-storey Pallas was built here, which was replaced in the 16th century by a magnificent building in the style of the German Renaissance. Impressive is the "Beautiful Door" by sculptor Pankras Wagner: It shows in a relief the Mother of God, Saints Peter, George, Kunigunde ud Heinrich and the personified rivers Main and Regnitz. Through this gate leads to the romantic, lined with half-timbered courtyard.

The Alte Hofhaltung houses the Historical Museum and the St. Catherine's Chapel.
The Katharinenkapelle offers place for civil wedding and there is since 2004 the cult section advanced 1000-year city history under the title "light and shadow" on the weekends from May to October.
