St. John's Church (Johanneskirche), Freiburg im Breisgau

The parish church of St. Johann in Freiburg (1895-1899) was built during the expansion phase of the Breisgau town in the late 19th century. The villages of Wiehre and Adelhausen in the south of the city were heavily involved in the development of the city. The new residential quarters set significant urban development accents, which were determined by the architecture of the Wilhelminian era with its inclination towards large formats, the use of materials, pathos and representation.
The distinctive place of the church in the extended city area pushed for a representative building, the red Main sandstone was chosen as building material, for the roofing blue-gray slate. In its style and with these materials, the stand-alone church - originally surrounded by park-like grounds - stood out from its surroundings.
