The small village of Tiefenellern with approx. 200 inhabitants is surrounded by the Gensberg, Stockenberg and the Hofholz. From here the serpentine road built in 1920/21 leads up to the Alb plateau, which is up to 200 m higher. The old, steeply ascending country road runs roughly parallel to this, and is still partly used today as an agricultural pathway.
