Ancient Jerash's hippodrome dates from the 3rd century and was probably intended for chariot races. It had a huge grandstand for several thousand spectators. The actual use changed several times over the centuries: the hippodrome became an amphitheater, a workshop for potters and dyers, a quarry and finally a mass grave for victims of the plague. Although it does not have the enormous dimensions of the facilities in Rome, it still offered space for almost 15,000 spectators. The facility is 244 meters long and 50 meters wide. The adjacent stables for horses and camels make it safe to say that it is a racecourse, while at first it was thought to be a naumachy (boat fighting facility).
