It was built in 1344 by the townspeople for the Beguines living nearby. The chancel features Stations of the Cross from the time of its construction, depicting the Jewish population as "Christ-killers" in a medieval, anti-Jewish manner. After the fortress was built, it became a garrison church. Tombs of fortress commanders are located to the left and right of the chancel. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, it served various purposes within the fortress (wine cellar, prison). Today a municipal building, it serves as a church for the Old Catholic and independent Evangelical Lutheran congregations.
