The city Landau was awarded by the Westphalian Peace Treaty France. As the eastern outpost to France, the military architect Vauban had the task of converting Landau into a fortress. The walls and outworks of the 1702 newly built fort north of the city of Landau still have a length of over 3.3 km and are provided with upstream ravelines, mine aisles and Poternen. The outer works and moats today form the Luitpoldpark. To visit are also the Nussdorf gate (north gate) which is currently being restored, as well as the Nussdorf fortress water pipe. On the way you will pass the Bismarck tower, which was built in 1910 from stones of the fort. The underground parts of Vauban Fortress can only be explored by a guide.

The Landau Fortress was a polygonal fortress type in Landau in the Palatinate. The construction work took place between 1688 and 1691. In 1871 the completely outdated fortress was razed after it was downgraded to a depot in 1867. Almost all the systems that are below street level have been preserved. A number of military and residential buildings are still visible today in the city, the lock systems and walls along the rivers, fortifications in parks, including the largest single system, the walls of the fort built in 1702 (with a total wall length of 3.3 km).
