The historic lock house is located in the middle of the district town of Landau. The lock house was part of the city fortress built between 1687 and 1691, the so-called Vauban fortress. With the lock house, the Queich or the artificially created Albersweiler Canal could be dammed, so it could be made navigable. The stones for the city fortifications and the fort were brought to Landau from the Albersweiler quarry, 12 km away.
