After the Thirty Years' War, the city was placed under French protection and then awarded to France. So in 1697, the French fortress builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban came to Landau and did what he always did: he built a fortress. 14,000 construction workers came to the region and erected city walls and outer fortifications, built a lock system with which the surrounding area could be flooded. This was called water defense, and a garrison moved into the city.
