In the Middle Ages, Deuten was the place of a "Freistuhl". A Freistuhl, also called a Freigericht, was a place for court meetings. In a document from the year 1482, the "frye Stoel Doyten" is named next to that of "Assenkamp" (at the Erler Eiche) and "Dryking" (probably near Raesfeld). Free courts usually met in the open air, in the open countryside under a tall tree, often in a prominent place, e.g. a large boulder.
