The Oaklands Mansion was built in 1894-96 as a private residence by the Enke family. This German family had settled in Eeklo in the second half of the 19th century and Herman Enke bought a sheet factory in Zuidmoerstraat on the old quay of 't Leiken. In 1904, the eldest son Herman Peter Enke had a second castle built under the name Pinehurst, located at Sportlaan 5. The entire domain, the Enke castle and the beautiful park, was purchased by the city of Eeklo in 1951 and was given the name Heldenpark. Since then, the Heldenpark has been synonymous with the Eeklo city park.
