Hiking
The Lieve - or 't Liefken, as they say in the Meetjesland - was the first canal to be dug in Western Europe. This happened between 1251 and 1269. De LIeve connected Ghent via the Wondelgemse Meersen, Waarschoot, Eeklo and Maldegem with Aardenburg and continued to the coast via Damme and the Zwin. The Lieve was shallow and narrow, and therefore only suitable for smaller boats. A good place to see 't LIefken is Café 't Oud Liefken.
