The building on the banks of the Ill takes its name from a former barracks in which the pontoniers were housed. This was famous for the role played by this group of engineers during the Battle of Berezina during the retreat of the Napoleonic army from Russia (November 26, 1812). After Napoleon's fall, the barracks were abandoned; It was not until 1902 that it was decided to build a new building at this location to accommodate the lycée for young girls from the city because the old premises had become too small.

The municipal lycée/high school was housed here until 1930, then the state lycée. In 1979, a renowned international school moved into “Les Pontonniers”, which welcomes French and foreign students from the Seconde (10th grade) to the preparatory classes for studying economics and commerce.

The Place du Frère Médard is located elsewhere.
The photos mostly show the Lycée des Pontonniers.
