Despite the disappearance of their roof in the 18th century, the Covered Bridges have kept their original name. They have preserved the beautiful towers which were attached to the fortifications of the former free imperial city of Strasbourg. Opposite, you can admire the Vauban dam built in the 17th century. To have a magnificent view of the bridges with the Grande Île and Strasbourg Cathedral in the background, do not hesitate to climb on Vauban's construction.

The remnants of the Strasbourg city walls from the 14th century span here over the canals of the Ill. In former times one locked additionally with a grid arrangement the city gate. The four formerly disguised wooden bridges were rebuilt from stone in the 19th century. In the four towers were until 1832 prisons and fortifications, the niches for the guns are still visible. A symbol of Strasbourg, the Ponts Couverts includes three bridges connected to each other, in addition to several stone towers that used to serve as defenses. The bridges cross the tributaries of the River Ill. Cross the bridge during the day and come back at night to see it all lit up, reflected in the glistening water of the side branches.
Gaze up at the impressive towers, which originally date back to the Middle Ages. The bridges were first built in the 13th century and used to have wooden covers, hence the name Ponts Couverts ('covered bridges'). Discover one of the few remaining traces of the medieval defensive city.
