It was built by the wealthy Hamburg merchant family Schröder (“Schröderstift”) in 1906. Designed by the architect Edmund Gevert. For unknown reasons, no one was ever buried here.
As the building was becoming increasingly dilapidated, a sponsor was found in 2009 in the form of “cultural investor” Klausmartin Kretschmer (formerly owner of the Rote Flora) with a right of use for 100 years, who put some money into the mausoleum and even held a few events there until 2014. In the meantime, however, this money tap has also been turned off and the building continues to deteriorate.
