Johann Philipp Reis was born in this house on January 7, 1834 in Gelnhausen. He died in Friedrichsdorf on January 14, 1874. He was a German physicist and inventor. With the development of the first functioning device for the transmission of sounds via electrical lines, he is regarded as the central pioneer of the telephone. In the course of this development, Reis also invented the contact microphone and in 1861 gave his device the name telephone, which later became internationally accepted. Another invention of Reis was roller skates, an early type of in-line skate but known before then.
