The sandstone rock, which was originally included on its west side as a stepping plate in the “Steingasse” mountain path, has been called “Elf-Uhr-Stein” by the Gelnhäuser since ancient times. The edge of the plate points in a north-south direction, so that the sundial can easily be read when the vineyards were still free of trees. The eleven o'clock stone slab in the shadow of the rock and dry stone wall was first reached by the sun at around 11 o'clock. The old wall edge of the dry stone wall then placed its shadow on the plate edge of the eleven o'clock stone.

Another explanation of the name says that at this point the “Steingasse” corridor, the women bringing lunch from the vineyards came into view around 11 o'clock.

We can find further information on this on the Berger slope near Frankfurt. There are also eleven o'clock stones in the vineyards there, which use the sun to tell the winegrowers who worked there the time.

Further west of this stone there was another sandstone, which has since disappeared, with an inscription from 1889, which reminded of the laborious work of the Gelnhausen winegrowers:

    "From God's goodness" and strength

I got it from a stone ridge

    accomplished a vineyard. "

So that everyone in the vineyards knew what the clock had 'struck': When the first ray of sunlight fell on this sandstone (which was then free-standing), eleven had struck.

The 11 o'clock stone is also reminiscent of the former vineyards above Gelnhausen. It practically had the function of a sundial that warned of the onset of noon.
