The Vredekapel in Appels is a chapel of thanksgiving that was built in 1945-1946 out of gratitude because no bombs had fallen on the territory of Appels during the Second World War. The initiative for the construction was taken by pastor Petrus Moens. The construction was paid for by the parishioners themselves. The architect was Frits Bosteels from Dendermonde. On Sunday 15 September 1946, the chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, was solemnly consecrated.

Peace Chapel is located on a triangular plot, flanked by lime trees, near the old Scheldt arm.
The Peace Chapel was built in 1945 in typical Flemish style by the parishioners of Appels as a thank you for the lives spared in WWII.

      Additional information
In Flanders, a lime tree was often planted near a chapel. After all, this tree is loaded with a lot of symbolism. For example, among the Germans the linden was the tree dedicated to Freya, goddess of love, domestic happiness and justice. Justice was often pronounced under the lime tree (Judicum sub Tilia).
The Dutch word subtle is derived from this.

The chapel, which is registered as a heritage site, was thoroughly restored in 2022. After 76 years, the chapel not only showed signs of its age, but also of vandalism.
