Here you will find one remnant of the city wall, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwewal. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwewal (Maastricht: Slevrouwewal) is both a street and a city wall or rampart. The rampart was part of both the first and second medieval city wall of Maastricht.

The original rampart dates from the 12th or 13th century, but has been renewed several times over the centuries. The street of the same name in the Jekerkwartier, which is only accessible to pedestrians via stairs, has four national monuments, including the rampart itself.

Due to the fall of the Roman Empire, the castellum here also fell into disrepair. However, Maastricht remained inhabited. The first city walls were built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Duke of Brabant. He gave the city the right to build a wall for protection.
