The spectacular Fort Eben-Emael is located on the west bank of the Albert Canal, about ten kilometers from Maastricht. Built between 1932 and 1935 to strengthen Belgium's defenses against Germany, it was long considered impregnable. But on May 10, 1940, it was captured by an elite force of German paratroopers, marking Belgium's entry into the war. It is therefore an absolute must on the route of remembrance tourism in Europe.
