Best Hiking Routes to Van Heutszpark Monuments and Fountain

Tips

  • Beautiful park, named after General Van Heutsz, on the edges of the old fortress of Coevorden. With beautiful monuments and ancient trees.

  • The park is located partly within and partly outside the city moat on the north side of the city and extends from the road Stationsstraat - Dalerallee to the Stieltjeskanaal. It is named after the Coevorden-born lieutenant general and governor of Aceh, Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz. The park features the Oranjebank, which was erected on the occasion of the birth of Princess Beatrix, and a Resistance Monument (1949) by Bas Galis (both within the city moat). At the highest point of the park, also within the moat, is the Coevorden water tower.

  • You can still clearly see the contours of the fortress.
