Johan Picardt wrote about Het Arsenaal in 1659: "Coevorden also has a powerful Ammunition House, consisting of several buildings, packed with all kinds of weapons, ammunition and materials, sufficient to withstand a long siege." The original Ammunition House was built in the early 17th century, while the current buildings date from about 1626.

In 2012 Het Arsenaal underwent a complete renovation on the inside. The renovated building was opened in June 2013, where the library, the Tourist Info, the Municipal Museum Coevorden and the Historical Association of Coevorden took up residence. The building now hosts these important cultural and historical organizations, making it a center of knowledge and heritage.
