The oldest canals in Drenthe, such as the Hoogeveensche Vaart, the Drentse Hoofdvaart and the Oranjekanaal, but also the Stieltjeskanaal were dug for the extraction of peat. Peat is dried peat that was the main fuel of our country until the beginning of the 20th century. The peat was excavated by hand. The cutters used a so-called trailer, an elongated narrow shovel with which the peat is cut from a wall and placed on a cart. As a tribute to all these people who have designed Drenthe, the Recreation Board placed an enlarged trailer at various places along the water. samendalen.nl/beziensworthheden/herinnering-aan-het-veen
