The city area, which slopes slightly from west to east towards Saale, was surrounded by a city wall around 1300. It was 12 meters high and 2 meters wide. Four corner towers and twelve shell towers were used for defense. You could get into the city through three city gates controlled by city guards: the Saaltor in the east, the Johannistor in the west and the Löbdertor in the south. Today three corner towers are still preserved, the names of which indicate their later use or their construction: the powder tower in the northwest, i.e. at the highest point of the city fortifications, the anatomy tower in the southwest and the Red Tower in the southeast. Only the foundation of the castle tower on today's university main building can be seen. Saaltor and Löbdertor were demolished in the 19th century. Only the Johannistor has withstood the change of time until today.

Around 4,000 inhabitants of the city of Jena lived around 1500 in small farmsteads consisting of houses, stables and workshops.

Old and modern close together - and right in the center. We love to be there.
