You could get into the city through three city gates controlled by city guards: the Saaltor in the east, the Johannistor in the west and the Löbdertor in the south. Three corner towers are still preserved today, the names of which indicate their later use or construction: the powder tower in the northwest, i.e. at the highest point of the city fortifications, the anatomy tower in the southwest and the Red Tower in the southeast. Only the foundation of the castle tower at today's university main building can be seen. Saaltor and Löbdertor were demolished in the 19th century. Only the Johannistor has withstood the change of time until today.

In the meantime, the rumor had spread to exams in all of the fields of study represented in Jena, especially among medical students, that the physics would not be passed if you had previously gone through the Johannistor.
We don't know where the myth came from, but many students still believe it today.

Part of the old city wall of Jena with the powder tower and the only preserved city gate Johannestor.
From time to time there are markets here, e.g. the historic Christmas market.
Otherwise you can sit and rest here
