The SaaleHorizontale trail winds along narrow paths through steep shell limestone slopes, offering spectacular views of the distinctive landscape of the central Saale Valley. Meadows alternate with lush, green beech forests. Light pine groves and the many open valley slopes repeatedly offer unobstructed views of small villages, castles, and palaces, and of course, the historic university town of Jena.
