The fictional stories about the tragic hero Don Quijote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, who have to endure numerous strange adventures, are Spanish world literature in the best sense of the word. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to us to find a tribute to the writer and poet (as well as the "literary father" - among other things - of the two characters depicted here) MIGUEL DE CERVANTES outside of his Spanish homeland in the form of this monument in Brussels.

On the Spanjeplein, somewhat hidden between the Brussels Grand-Place and the Central Station, there is an imposing equestrian statue on a stone base of Don Quixote depicted on his horse Rosinante and accompanied by his faithful servant Sancho Panza riding his donkey Rucio.
It is an almost exact copy of the statue that stands on the square of the same name in Madrid. Spain presented it to the City of Brussels in 1989 after the end of their six-month presidency at the European Community. The sculpture is the work of the Spanish sculptors Lorenzo and Frederico Coullaut-Valera.
