In the 14th century there was only a pond here, the so-called Jewish pool.
The grounds were purchased in 1337 and reclaimed by a wealthy Dutch citizen, Willem van Duvenvoorde, who had a large country house and a chapel dedicated to Saint George built there. In 1404 his granddaughter married the Count Engelbert of Nassau, who immediately became the owner of the extensive domain. Their descendants had the chapel converted in Gothic style, which we can still admire today, built in the Albertina library (Kunstberg).
