The Sandkerwa is a traditional Bamberg folk festival that takes place every year in August in the sand - i.e. around the Sandstrasse. Every year it attracts around 300,000 visitors over five days, making it the largest folk festival in Bamberg and one of the largest folk festivals in Bavaria. The highlight of the Sandkerwa is the historical jousting of the Bamberg boatmen and fishermen's guild against the backdrop of Little Venice, the former fishing district on the Regnitz. Since the 15th century, the jousting has served to amuse the prince bishop and the population.
