The Domplatz, also known as the Neuer Markt in the past, can look back on more than a thousand years of history. Under Otto I, a palace was built on the square, which was one of the largest in Central Europe. It was to become the center of the empire.
The Palatinate was excavated between 1959 and 1968. The remains of Carolingian fortifications and prehistoric finds were uncovered. The foundation walls of a hall building with pillar templates on the outside, outer and inner apses, two spiral staircases and tension walls in the inner area were excavated from the Palatinate.
The Palatinate was probably destroyed along with the first Romanesque cathedral in the city fire of 1207. After that it served as a quarry for the construction of the new cathedral.
The expansion to the strongest Prussian fortress from the end of the 17th century also meant changes for the cathedral square. After 1688 it became a paved parade ground for the surrounding barracks. The plaster pattern corresponded to the conditions of the drill.
The houses on Domplatz were mostly built in the Baroque style of the 18th century. Notable buildings include the houses on Domplatz 1, the two buildings of the old and new Möllenvogtei, Domplatz 2/3, the former electoral palace that was built at the beginning of the 18th century, Domplatz 5, the so-called Fürstenhof and the north side of the Domplatz, which were rebuilt true to the original from 1953.

The Domplatz was designed in 2014 after two years of renovation work with lighting, benches, flooring as well as light and water features.

Spacious square at the imposing cathedral. The surrounding buildings are from all sorts of different eras.

The State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt is a building complex on the Domplatz in Magdeburg, which has served as the home of the parliament of the state of Saxony-Anhalt since 1991. The hallmark of the building, directly opposite Magdeburg Cathedral, is the bourgeois-baroque façade of what were once four separate neighboring buildings. Wikipedia

Even the size of the cathedral goes down a little.

The Cathedral Square is centrally located in the old town / city center of Magdeburg. It is surrounded by sights of various architectures: "The Green Citadel of Magdeburg" an impressive architectural work by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Magdeburg Cathedral of St. Mauritius and Catherine as the tallest building in the city and various gastronomic establishments in the new NBank building.

In the immediate vicinity are, among others, the Art Museum of Our Dear Women, the Roncalli House, the St. Sebastian Church and the Himmelreich Gallery. There is something for every visitor / tourist on the Cathedral Square. Regular events, such as concerts, performances or the annual Cathedral Festival, attract many visitors to the Cathedral Square year after year.

The square in front of the cathedral is spacious and is bordered on two sides by baroque buildings.
The Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection and the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt have their headquarters here.
There is probably no other parliament in the world that has to make its decisions in such a historic place and where the Justice and Consumer Protection Minister looks into a medieval grave complex through a viewing window in the floor when she leaves her house.
For well over 1200 years, the cathedral square has been something of an intellectual, cultural center and a historical center.

Large square framed by beautiful buildings (e.g. cathedral, state parliament, ministry of justice). Unfortunately closed for an event. The cathedral was also closed from 3 p.m. on the day of the visit. However, the pictures attached to the event fence promise a lot.
