The Domplatz, also known as the Neuer Markt in the past, can look back on more than a thousand years of history. Under Otto I, a palace was built on the square, which was one of the largest in Central Europe. It was to become the center of the empire.
The Palatinate was excavated between 1959 and 1968. The remains of Carolingian fortifications and prehistoric finds were uncovered. The foundation walls of a hall building with pillar templates on the outside, outer and inner apses, two spiral staircases and tension walls in the inner area were excavated from the Palatinate.
The Palatinate was probably destroyed along with the first Romanesque cathedral in the city fire of 1207. After that it served as a quarry for the construction of the new cathedral.
The expansion to the strongest Prussian fortress from the end of the 17th century also meant changes for the cathedral square. After 1688 it became a paved parade ground for the surrounding barracks. The plaster pattern corresponded to the conditions of the drill.
The houses on Domplatz were mostly built in the Baroque style of the 18th century. Notable buildings include the houses on Domplatz 1, the two buildings of the old and new Möllenvogtei, Domplatz 2/3, the former electoral palace that was built at the beginning of the 18th century, Domplatz 5, the so-called Fürstenhof and the north side of the Domplatz, which were rebuilt true to the original from 1953.

The Domplatz was designed in 2014 after two years of renovation work with lighting, benches, flooring as well as light and water features.
